Global and national prevalence rates have been steadily increasing, highlighting the urgent need for a deeper understanding of this condition. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by an imbalance in the metabolism of various nutrients, including fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The significant rise in diabetes cases in recent times can be attributed to factors such as population growth and aging, urbanization, increasing prevalence of obesity and sedentary lifestyles, and improved survival rates among individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This surge in cases, often accompanied by a concerning lack of public awareness about the basic characteristics of the disease, leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment, further exacerbating the situation. In light of this context, the objective of this study is to describe the challenges faced by individuals with diabetes mellitus and the biases that influence adherence to treatment. Methodology: This study is a research with a qualitative approach, of a basic, explanatory and bibliographic nature whose data were obtained through free access scientific databases, the data collection period took place between July and August 2024 and The inclusion criteria were original articles from the period from 2019 to the present, research indexed in public and free databases. Results: Through the extraction of articles through the prism, 15 articles were selected for contextualization, where the studies bring as results with regard to adherence to diabetes mellitus treatment: family support, health literacy, socioeconomic and behavioral factors, presence of comorbidities and diabetes-related complications. Conclusion: To improve adherence to diabetes treatment, a multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare professionals, patients, and their families is essential.
