In this context, this thesis conducts an analysis of the legal responsibilities of this institution and its role in ensuring access to justice for those with limited resources. It examines the concept, historical evolution, and movements that have contributed to the development of access to justice, recognizing it as a fundamental right of individuals. It also addresses the constitutional and legal history of the Public Defender's Office, its institutional principles, and the functions it performs in the legal context of Brazil. Finally, the aim of this work is to understand how the Public Defender's Office of the state of Rio Grande do Sul works to promote access to rights for inmates in the state. It seeks to understand the importance of access to justice and equal justice, especially in the criminal sphere, the functions of the Public Defender's Office, as well as the client base it serves in the field of Criminal Law and to ascertain what collective actions are taken to support inmates by the Public Defender's Office of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and what the results of these activities are. Additionally, it addresses the tools and outcomes of the Public Defender's Office's efforts to provide access to justice for those assisted individuals involved in criminal issues, offering assistance and support to the needy. The results obtained from the research reveal the notoriety of this institution, as it promotes actions to reach a greater number of people and provide access to information and specialized assistance. In this way, it aims to ensure that individuals undergoing a criminal justice process have their rights protected and that the law is followed correctly.
