Abstract/Resumen
Introduction: Potential health impacts caused by the implementation of hydroelectric power plants are related to the alteration of the water flow, the formation of the reservoir with alteration of the hydraulic characteristics and the dynamics of the river flow and the construction and operation of the work, resulting in major social and environmental transformations; Given the magnitude of these changes and the health impact on the affected population, this study questions which health impacts are related to the implementation of the Machadinho Hydroelectric Power Plant. Objective: To analyze the environmental health indicators of gauchos municipalities affected by the implementation of the Machadinho Hydroelectric Power Plant. Methodology: quantitative study with ecological design, having as scope the gauchos municipalities considered by the environmental impact studies, officially reached by the Machadinho HPP: Machadinho, Maximiliano de Almeida, Pinhal da Serra and Barracão; The period studied was 10 years - 1998 to 2007. The sources for data collection were the website of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System. The analysis and interpretation of the data was made in accordance with the Environmental Health Matrix. Results: From 1998 to 2002, period referring to the time of the construction of the HPP, the Environmental Health Matrix registered a score of 368; Between 2003 and 2007, after the construction period, the score was 366.9. According to the total score obtained, the magnitude of the impact of the enterprise is classified as severe health impact. Conclusion: the impacts on health during the construction period was greater compared to the period after construction, possibly caused by the increased migration of workers to the construction of this hydroelectric plant.
