Obesity is a major chronic non-communicable disease and cause of morbidities and mortalities, affecting the quality of life of several individuals. Faced with this, the insistent search for products and foods that help in the treatment and reduction of body weight has been increasing. Various products and foods are constantly investigated in studies and experiments in the search for weight loss. One is green tea, a functional food, derived from the leaves of the shrub Camellia sinensis. The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between green tea use and weight loss. This was a retrospective, descriptive qualitative review, structured through a bibliographical research, exploratory and with a critical eye on scientific studies, researches and controversies. The articles came from the Scielo, Lilacs, Medline, Pubmed and Google Academic databases. Tea has positive returns due to its thermogenic effect and to promote oxidation and fat burning. Green tea has positive effects in most studies, but its consumption and long-term effects should be analyzed and investigated, since the mechanisms of action of the properties are varied and also does not have an exact consumption dosage.
